(PRWEB) November 11, 2009 -- EuroDNS announces the opening of a pre-registration period for .eu Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), based on a first-come, first-served model. Companies and individuals based in the European Union have now the opportunity to register domain names that contain non-Latin characters under the .eu domain.

Xavier Buck, CEO of EuroDNS states, "The opening of IDNs for the .eu is a huge step forwards for businesses and individuals in Europe. This implementation will support the 23 official languages of the European Union as well as the entire alphabets. However there won’t be any sunrise period and as it is on a first-come, first-served basis, it is crucial that customers and especially the owners of a registered trademark register in advance via our interface, www.eurodns.com, in order to secure their names."

IDNs are domain names that contain non-Latin characters. These characters include, for example, the Cyrillic, Latin accents and characters from the Bulgarian and Greek alphabets. The characters that will be supported can be found here: http://www.eurid.eu/en/eu-domain-names/idns-eu/supported-characters.

"IDNs are particularly important for .eu,” notes Marc Van Wesemael, EURid General Manager. “EURid supports all twenty-three official EU languages, and our employees come from twenty of the twenty-seven Member States. Supporting the use and growth of Internationalised Domain Names comes naturally to us."

Another important technical aspect is the impossibility to mix scripts or characters from different scripts/alphabets in a single IDN, as some characters can look so similar that they cannot be differentiated. The maximum length of the IDN must be 63 characters after it is converted into the ACE string format needed by the Domain Name System (source: http://www.eurid.eu/en/eu-domain-names/idns-eu/idn-technical-limitations).

The start of the registration for the .eu IDNs is December 10th 2009, during which EuroDNS will submit all domain names being pre-registered.
